Itinerary:

DAY 1 – Arrive Savannah Welcome to Savannah! Savannahians are rightfully proud of their charming historic district. The original city was planned and laid out in 1733 by its founder, General James Edward Oglethorpe. The city consisted of 24 park-like squares surrounded by some of the South’s most elegant mansions. Today, almost all of Oglethorpe’s original squares remain intact. They’re now lush garden parks that beautifully showcase 18th and 19th century homes and buildings. Arrive at our downtown hotel, and be met by our tour director before a “welcome dinner” at the fabled (and some say haunted!) Pirate’s House. (D)

DAY 2 – Savannah Touring Discover Savannah, home to the largest restored historical district in America, after breakfast. Experience the colorful Riverfront district, and unique shops and restaurants converted from old cotton warehouses. Relax on the waterfront for a mini-shopping stop and lunch. This afternoon, take a picturesque drive up the Avenue of the Oaks to Wormsloe Historic Site and journey back in time to see how Savannah’s first settlers tamed the new wilderness. Tonight, see Savannah from the water on a dinner cruise with live entertainment. (B, D)

DAY 3 – Beaufort Get an early start after breakfast, as we visit the “Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands.” Beaufort’s origins reach back to the 1600s, when Barbadian planters, English indentured servants, and religious dissenters arrived to seek new lives. Prior to the Civil War, Beaufort was considered the wealthiest, most aristocratic and cultivated town of its size in America. Today, the downtown area still boasts many Pre-Revolutionary War and Civil War homes. We will see homes that were filmed in many movies, including: The Big Chill, The Great Santini, Rules of Engagement and Forrest Gump. This afternoon, a truly unique experience, as we learn about the Gullah culture on the Sea Island of St. Helena. When the Civil War ended with a Union victory, over 10,000 slaves were freed from Beaufort County alone. Their descendents preserve a culture created out of African beliefs, Christianity, and folk traditions developed here in the New World. Our local guide will help you look into this world. End the afternoon with a Gullah Dinner before returning to Savannah for the night. (B, D)

DAY 4 – Middleton Place/Magnolia Plantation Depart after breakfast, traveling to Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark and a carefully preserved 18th-century plantation that has survived revolution, Civil War, and earthquake. Later, continue to Magnolia Plantation. Here, walk through the oldest major garden in America, continually planted since the 1680s, and affording year-round color. See the plantation house – a Southern classic with its elegant, columned porch and extensive collection of heirlooms and Early American museum-quality antiques. Visit the extensive gift shop and the Gallery of American Nature and Wildlife artists, exhibiting works from America’s top 50 wildlife artists and all notable local wildlife artists since the 18th century. Arrive at our Charleston home before dinner at the Crab Shack, featuring “Shactackular” Low Country Cuisine. (B, D)

DAY 5 – Charleston Breakfast before we discover Charleston on our city tour. This beautiful city continues to be preserved, restored and protected. Its vast Historic District is filled with tiny alleys, walled gardens, and stately homes. Visit the Edmondston-Alston House, built on Charleston’s High Battery in 1825 by a shipping merchant. This afternoon, enjoy a delightful harbor cruise – past Forts Moultrie, Sumter, and Johnson; and Patriot’s Point, the home of the Yorktown, the famous “Fighting Lady” of World War II. Tonight’s farewell dinner caps the day. (B, D)

DAY 6 – Homeward Journey Alas, after breakfast, it’s time to depart for home. We leave, taking with us warm memories of the charms of the Low Country. (B)
